The Largo Medical Center (LMC) PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency is a 12-month program with pharmacy staff and faculty committed to ensuring residents graduate with confidence and assertiveness needed to address patients’ healthcare needs to fellow colleagues, nurses, physicians, patients and their families. This residency offers a unique experience, melding the community hospital setting with medical and nursing education components. We have the largest ACGME program in the state with over 100 medical residents (including a cardiology and critical care fellowship program), in addition to nursing education with the Jersey College Nursing program at our site. We provide the opportunity for our residents to learn in a variety of patient care settings, receiving instruction in medication management from dedicated, competent, and enthusiastic preceptors.
The Largo Medical Center PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program is committed to providing a robust training environment grounded in excellent training experiences that support the resident’s clinical, academic, and professional interests. The mission of Largo Medical Center’s PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is to develop a highly qualified independent pharmacy practitioner able to ensure safe and effective medication use, manage their practice, and advance pharmaceutical knowledge through educational and scholarly activities. The program is designed to produce future pharmacy leaders able to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to provide optimal patient centered medication management for all patients.
Program Purpose Statement
The Largo Medical Center PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and provides an environment conducive to the growth and development of clinical pharmacists able to provide responsible planning and management of medication-related patient care. The program affords the pharmacy resident with mentorship, guidance, motivation, and opportunity to ensure optimal patient outcomes, and produce confident, self-directed learners who are eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Eligibility & Application
- Applicants must be graduates or candidates for graduation from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited degree program (or one in process of pursuing accreditation)
- Licensed or eligible to apply for a license to practice pharmacy in the state of Florida. All being selected residents MUST be licensed in the state of Florida by October 1st.
- Participate in the ASHP Residency Matching Program
- Completed application submitted to PhORCAS prior to January 5, and include:
- Letter of intent
- Copy of pharmacy school transcript
- Three professional references/evaluations submitted via PhORCAS
- Curriculum vitae
- If selected, an on-site interview is required for Phase I of the Match. If necessary, an online interview (e.g. Skype) is required for Phase II (i.e. scramble) of the Match.
The LMC PGY1 Residency Program participates in the ASHP Resident Matching program. The residency program participates in the ASHP residency showcase as the primary recruiting forum and uses the online admissions management software platform, PhORCAS to support the residency recruiting process. The deadline for receipt of application materials is January 5th.
The following are examples of items considered during the selection process:
- Professional competence based on clinical APPE rotations, as well as work, presentation, research, biomedical writing/publishing and practical experience
- Collegiate achievements
- Communication skills represented in the letter of intent, professional references, APPE, academic, and interview performance
- Leadership potential as indicated by the nature and extent of participation in professional societies, community or public services, and social activities
- Ability to work cooperatively with others
- Research / Quality Improvement Project with manuscript suitable for publishing
- Poster presentation at ASHP Midyear Meeting
- Presentation at Florida Residency Conference
- Hospital specific or Division Wide Medication Use Evaluation
- Minimum of three journal clubs and three case presentations
- GME Grand Rounds Presentation
- Transition of care. Medication reconciliation
- Community Involvement Event
- Successfully obtain "Achieved for Residency" for 80 percent of ASHP PGY-1 Residency taught goals/objectives
Core required rotations includes the following:
- Administration (4 weeks)
- Critical Care (8 weeks)
- Infectious Disease (4 weeks)
- Internal Medicine (8 weeks)
- Orientation (4 weeks)
- Research Methods Concentrated (2 weeks)
Elective concentrated rotations may include but is not limited to the following (Three, 4–weeks rotations):
- Advanced Cardiac Critical care with MCS
- Behavioral Health
- Burn ICU (Black Medical Center)
- Medication Safety
- Neonatal ICU (Medical Center of Trinity)
Longitudinal 48 weeks required rotations include the following:
- Pharmacy Management
- QI Project
- Pharmacy Operations (Staffing)
Pay, Benefits & Working Conditions
Detailed information about salary, benefits and amenities will be provided to pharmacy residents by Human Resources.
- Salary: Competitive
- Duration of appointment: One year, beginning on July 1 of the program year.
- Vacation and holiday leave: 10 days of paid time off (PTO) can be taken during rotations throughout the year with prior approval from the rotation preceptor and residency program director. Residents are required to work some holidays.
- Sick and family leave: Sick leave is deducted from PTO. Residents are expected to notify co-workers and their respective preceptor or supervisor as early as possible when illness requires absence.
- Educational and professional leave: Nine days are granted for paid professional leave to attend appropriate continuing education or professional programs, travel to job interviews or visit other residency sites or professional practice locations. Requests for professional leave must be submitted to the residency program director. Residents are expected to attend the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting as well as the Florida Residency Conference. Financial assistance is provided for travel, meals and lodging expenses for these meetings.
- Health benefits: Residents are eligible for health benefits as full-time pharmacist employees of Largo Medical Center.
- Liability insurance: All pharmacy residents are covered under Largo Medical Center’s liability insurance policy. This insurance does not cover any other professional services at facilities outside of Largo Medical Center.
- Office space and resources: Office space for use by pharmacy residents is provided at each site. A laptop is also available for each resident. One lab coat will be provided at no charge to each resident.
- Discounts and amenities: Residents are eligible to receive a wide variety of entertainment, health and other discounts via HCARewards.
- Parking: Pharmacy residents park free in approved locations.
