The American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines - Gold Plus for Stroke Care and for Heart Failure Care
As Tony Degina is mentioning during this month's employee forums, the staff and physicians at Largo Medical Center are proud to announce receipt of two prestigious healthcare quality awards presented by the American Heart Association through its Get with the Guidelines program. One of the quality awards is for the care the hospital provides stroke patients. The other is for the care provided to those in heart failure.
The Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: Stroke Honor Roll recognizes the hospital's commitment to providing appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research based guidelines on the latest scientific evidence.
The Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award shows Largo Medical Center is committed to following the most up-to-date, research based standards with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure patients.
"Largo Medical Center's mission is dedicated to improving the quality of care for every patient including those suffering heart failure and stroke," said Anthony Degina, CEO, Largo Medical Center. "By continuing to implement the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines programs, we accomplish this goal by tracking and measuring our success in meeting these internationally respected guidelines."
"Research has shown there are benefits to patients who are treated at hospitals that have adopted the Get With The Guidelines program," said Paul Heidenreich, MD, MS, national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. "Get With The Guidelines research has demonstrated the impact of lowering 30-day readmissions and reducing mortality rates."
According to the American Heart Association, on average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies from one every four minutes and about 800,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke every year. They say 5.7 million people are suffering from heart failure today with statistics showing 870,000 new cases being diagnosed annually with 50 percent of those patients dying within five years. Proper medications and healthy lifestyle changes can change that.
