Largo, FL – Largo Medical Center is pleased to announce Transplant and Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgeon, Hussein Osman-Mohamed, MD, PhD, FACS has been named Medical Director of the hospital’s soon-to-open Transplant Institute of Florida (TIF), currently approved for adult kidney transplantation. Dr. Mohammed will begin his duties with TIF in December in preparation for its opening in 2015. He will also oversee The Hepatobiliary Center at Largo Medical Center. Hepatobiliary services include treating diseases of the liver, pancreas and gall bladder.

“Dr. Mohamed is not only a dual fellowship-trained surgeon, he is a highly-skilled hepatobiliary specialist, has worked teaching medical students and researches in his field of expertise,” said Anthony Degina, Largo Medical Center, Chief Executive Officer. “And it’s that expertise that a teaching hospital, like Largo Medical Center, is excited to provide for its patients and community.”

Degina says this transplant program will give patients:

  • more access to transplant services,
  • reduced wait times for patients who are on donation lists,
  • shorter travel times for candidates who live in West Florida

The hospital is one of eight statewide approved to provide kidney transplant services. It was in March 2014, Largo Medical Center announced this highly specialized adult kidney transplant program was approved to serve our local community as well other areas throughout the state of Florida and beyond.
