Tampa, FL - The HCA West Florida Division held its 1st annual Graduate Medical Education (GME) Consortium Poster Exhibition on Monday, June 5, 2017. The event gathered residents, teaching faculty physicians and leadership from all of HCA’s West Florida teaching hospitals for poster presentations of scholarly work addressing local health concerns, scientific studies and the growing role that residents have as they serve our communities. All participants were able to review and discuss findings with their peers and all other attendees. At the end of the evening, prizes were awarded in several categories.

“HCA is one of the area’s largest sponsors of graduate medical education, with seven teaching hospitals sponsoring 337 residents training in 21 different specialty programs in Tampa Bay today,” explained Frederick Schiavone, MD, FACEP, DIO & Vice President of GME for HCA West Florida. “We are committed to helping alleviate the physician shortage by expanding opportunities to train the next generation of physicians, and provide them with opportunities to improve clinical quality and community health.”

HCA West Florida teaching hospitals include Blake Medical Center, Brandon Regional Hospital, Largo Medical Center, Northside Hospital, Oak Hill Hospital, Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point and St. Petersburg General Hospital. Plans are to expand GME locally to more than 550 resident slots in the 2018-2019 academic year and to add Citrus Memorial Hospital and Medical Center of Trinity to the ranks of teaching hospitals by initiating training in these sites as well.

Nationally, HCA is one of the largest GME providers, with more than 237 residency and fellowship programs in 49 hospitals across 14 states. On July 1, 2017, 3144 residents and fellows will be training in HCA programs, expanding to more than 6825 by 2022.
