Jose Priego is a 53 year old Hispanic man, who worked as a Supervisor with a demolition company. When arriving home after visiting his wife in hospital, he developed a severe headache. Unsure of what was going on, his daughter called 911. The paramedics rushed him to Largo Medical Center Emergency Room where he was diagnosed with Stroke.
He was admitted to Largo Medical Center immediately and transferred to Indian Rocks Rehabilitation to start rehabilitation. Upon admission to the unit, Jose had significant impairments including right sided weakness and no movement in his right dominant arm. He required extensive assistance for all tasks. Jose has a very supportive immediate and extensive family who visited him daily and encouraged him to regain his independence. This support, along with the rehabilitation team helped him maintain a positive state of mind.
Jose worked with the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy teams for three hours a day, five days a week. After four weeks of intensive rehabilitation he was discharged home to his family with a greatly improved level of independence and mobility.
Jose said, “Therapy is strict, but very good. It helps with energy levels … so the patient doesn’t get lazy”.
About his stay at Indian Rocks Rehabilitation “Perfect - 100% satisfaction. Everyone is very friendly and helpful – nurses, therapy, housekeeping”. His wife stated she liked the different visiting hours and is glad she was involved in his plan of care.
