New Minimally-Invasive Treatment Option
Largo Medical Center is offering an innovative treatment for the heart rhythm disorder called Atrial Fibrillation, or AFib. The procedure is called Convergent. During the procedure, a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and an Electrophysiologist work as a team, in one setting, using minimally invasive approaches and techniques. Radiofrequency (extreme heat) is used to produce lesions (scars) on the heart which will block the abnormal electrical signals once a scar tissue is formed. This is what helps restore normal heart rhythm, often taking patients off of medications they’ve been on for years. Very few centers perform this procedure nationwide.
