Common Conditions of the Back and Neck
The Florida Spine & Neuro Center provides quality care and treatment for several conditions that can affect your spine including:
Ankylosing Spondylitis - A form of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine.
Chiari Malformation - A condition that causes brain tissue to push down into the spinal canal.
Degenerative Disc Disease (ODD) - As you age, your intervertebral discs can degenerate and become problematic.
Herniated Disc -Occurs when some of the soft center material of the disc, pushes through the exterior of the disc.
Kyphosis -Is an exaggerated rounding of your mid-back giving you a "humpback" look.
Lordosis - Is an exaggerated forward curve of your lower back giving you a'swayback' look.
Osteoporosis - A decrease in bone mass and density. Often resulting in spinal fractures.
Pinched Nerves - Nerves can be pinched as they leave the spinal canal by a herniated disc, bone spurs or stenosis.
Piriformis Syndrome - The sciatic nerve runs right through the belly of the piriformis muscle and if the muscle contracts from being overused, the sciatic nerve becomes strangled, producing sciatic like symptoms.
Radiculopathy - Nerve root impingement and/or inflammation is causing neurologic symptoms in the areas that are supplied by the affected nerve root(s).
Sciatica -When the sciatic nerve is injured or inflamed, it can cause intense pain, loss of reflexes, weakness and numbness along any part of the sciatic nerve pathway; from the buttocks to the toes.
Scoliosis -Causes the spine to curve left to right instead of the normal anterior/posterior curves.
Spinal Compression Fractures -Osteoporosis isone of the more common causes.
Stenosis - A compression of the spinal cord or peripheral nerves as they exit the spinal canal.
Spondylolisthesis - When one vertebra slips forward over the one beneath. (Spondylolysisis a specific defect in the connection between vertebrae. This defect can lead to small stress fractures in the vertebrae that can weaken the bones so much that one slips out of place, and therefore becomes spondylolisthesis.)
Spondylosis - AKA spinal osteoarthritis. A degeneration of the spine from wear and tear.
Each of these conditions requires a specialized treatment plan to get our patients back to their optimum quality of life in the shortest time possible.
