The three year Dermatology Residency program at Largo Medical Center is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and emphasizes the osteopathic concept of total health care. The program provides a clinically stimulating and academically rigorous curriculum in an environment of mentoring and professional development.
The program provides extensive participation in patient care across two campuses; Largo Medical Center and Largo Medical Center – Indian Rocks, as well as four other inpatient health care facilities in the area. Residents spend the majority of their clinical time at the six Bay Dermatology offices. A weekly dermatology clinic provides additional clinical experience opportunities. Residents receive exposure to patients across the disease and age spectrums.
Experience in plastic surgery, pediatric dermatology, cosmetic dermatology and other electives are available. The curriculum may be adjusted to meet the specific educational objectives of the Residents as long as such changes meet the AOA Basic Standards. Dermatology Grand Rounds take place weekly. Outside rotations are performed at various institutions throughout the United States.
Daily and monthly lectures as well as conferences provide a strong didactic program, including Morning Report, case presentations, noon lectures, Grand Rounds and Tumor Board. Journal Club and book review are conducted weekly.
The faculty consists of board-certified dermatologists and dermatopathologists. Dermatology Residents hold membership in, and participate in the Florida West Coast Society of Dermatology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
Residents complete a 3 year training program. Working hours are generally 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dermatology Residents take pager call for a month at a time, two times per year. Residents receive a total of 20 days of paid time off which can be used for vacation, personal needs and holidays. Residents are also allowed a total of 5 days of paid time for continuing medical education and conference attendance.
