Largo, FL – Minimally invasive surgery is often the preferred method of treatment when available. Largo Medical Center is proud to announce it is offering surgical weight loss alternatives by giving patients an advanced, minimally invasive opportunity to get back to a healthier, happier lifestyle with the use of the well-known da Vinci Si® Surgical Robot. Instead of larger abdominal incisions used in open surgery, the robotic approach allows surgeons to make fewer, smaller incisions - similar to traditional laparoscopy.
Pinellas County’s first minimally invasive robotic bariatric or weight loss surgical sleeve procedure was Tuesday, November 19, 2013. A sleeve is when the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size. There is no rerouting of the intestines as with the gastric bypass procedure.
Tiffany Jessee, DO, Bariatric & General Surgeon at Largo Medical Center is performing this first-of-its-kind surgery in our area. “With more people today wanting to lose weight and/or get off medications they’ve been on for life related to obesity comorbidities, the robot offers many benefits helping entice perspective patients,” said Dr. Jessee. “Benefits may include less blood loss, less pain, a faster recovery and reduced scarring.”
The da Vinci surgical system works in 3D high-definition with special instruments for the wrist that bend and rotate giving the surgeon a greater range of motion than the human wrist. This enables surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.
“This sleeve procedure is a great alternative for those with higher BMI’s,” said Anthony Degina, Chief Executive Officer at Largo Medical Center. “Largo Medical Center is excited to be able to offer this new technology to those living here in Pinellas County and beyond who can benefit from this type of surgical approach.”
